The area is known as Britain’s surf-capital. A breeding ground for champions and host of world championships, but it is also a gigantic surf campus where people of all ages can learn in safety, with expert tuition and build their confidence on waves that range in difficulty from easy to awesome. You are never more than an easy drive from red-blooded history. Stratton, for example, where the Civil War battle of Stamford Hill (1643) is re-enacted annually and Tintagel, where King Arthur ruled and Mordred plotted. To the east is Roche Rock, spiritual home of Druidic Gorsedd, and Bodmin, site of a notorius jail and gateway to the Moor made famous by Jamaica Inn. Further south, you can enjoy an 800-year sweep of history between 11th century Restormel Castle and Treffry’s Viaduct, an engineering feat of the Industrial Revolution on the Saint’s Way to the Elizabethan port of Fowey. To the west, meanwhile, is Land’s End, the island fortress of St Michael’s Mount and the living legend of The Merry Maidens, turned to stone for dancing on a Sunday. It is a lot easier to get here now as a result of major road improvements made in 2007. Follow the M5 to Exeter then take the A30 Expressway to within 5 miles of Trevornick. |
